Don't Forget -- October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month!

On October 13th, I had the privilege to speak at the 2011 Breast Cancer Global Congress; a partnership of the US Department of State and the Avon Foundation for Women. Bringing together breast cancer advocates, NGO leaders, doctors, health policy experts, and public health authorities, the event aimed to share knowledge on best practices such that each attendee could improve their breast cancer outreach, screening and treatment services. The event, held in Washington DC, touched upon several aspects of breast cancer. My presentation, entitled “Breast Cancer in Low and Middle Income Countries: Meeting the Challenges” addressed the stark disparities in survival and outcome between the developed and developing world. This 2011 Breast Cancer Global Congress presentation can be viewed in full under the "presentations" tab above and news coverage on the Gift of Life Breakfast can be found here.

  1. There is a common misconception that men cannot have breast cancer. Men often ignore the symptoms of breast cancer or mistook them for other illnesses. Factors such as social stigma and embarrassment contribute to the increasing denial among men of the possibility of getting breast cancer.
